Frontispiece to Realdo Colombo’s De re anatomica (1559). In which Colombo (c1516-1559) claimed to have ‘discovered’ the clitoris, rivalling the contemporaneous claim of Gabriel Fallopio. This discovery that (shock) all women possessed a clitoris threw into disarray previous insistence that it was a signal of hermaphroditism (ie. a small penis, to be used by tribades), or a witches mark, or in any other way ‘deviant’.

Medical historians still can’t agree who found it first, but it will be a relatively empty victory: classical medicine knew all too well about the clitoris and its role in female sexual pleasure.
